Le corrispondenti frasi inglesi si possono costruire in due modi: "the book I told you about" oppure "the book about which I told you", "the person I was showing the way out to" oppure "the person to whom I was showing the way out". La prima costruzione è utilizzata nella lingua corrente, parlata e scritta, la seconda è limitata all'uso formale, soprattutto scritto.
